About Dyson

Dyson is a global technology company with engineering and testing operations in Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and the UK. Dyson employs over 12,000 people globally including 5,853 engineers and scientists – with an increasing proportion in South East Asia where production and operations also take place.

Dyson is realising ambitious plans to develop new technologies with global teams focused solid state battery cells, high-speed electric motors, vision systems, machine learning technologies, and AI.

Dyson’s 67 acre campus in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, is home to the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology, which opened in September 2017. Dyson is making a £60m investment into UK higher education to help overcome the shortage of engineers in the UK. The four year degree programme, free of tuition fees, covers the fundamentals of engineering in years one and two. It delivers electronics and mechanical engineering content in years three and four – all alongside a paid job within Dyson’s research and development team, working on real products, with leading engineers and scientists.

In September 2017 Dyson revealed that it has been working on a vehicle for three years. It announced that it would be investing £2bn into the development of the BEV for launch in 2021. The project builds on Dyson’s existing expertise in solid state batteries, motors, vision systems, robotics, HVAC and aerodynamics.

Dyson in China

Since its launch in China in November 2012, Dyson has expanded its footprint by investing in people, its supply chain, retail channels and in understanding Chinese consumers via its Technology Lab. The company already employs over 1,200 people nationally primarily through its Shanghai HQ and Technology Lab, its Suzhou Service Centre and its network of Dyson in-store Experts.

The Shanghai Technology Lab launched in 2017 with a team of 50 engineers and supporting roles, drawing on China’s strength in cloud-based software and connectivity expertise. Already Dyson has collaborated with local technology companies including Alibaba to bring to life voice control on its products.

Dyson has made an investment of 1.45 bn into China in 2018, including the expansion of its direct retail stores and establishing a new Shanghai headquarters in Nov, 2018. The focus on direct retail has already seen Dyson invest in opening 12 flagship Dyson Demo stores in China due to date. These Dyson Demo stores are supported by a network of 731 Dyson shop-in-shops covering 90 cities nationally, with all of them employing full time Dyson trained specialists.

Dyson in the UK

Total UK headcount has increased 2.5 times over the last five years to 4,800. The iconic former Ministry of Defence airfield at Hullavington already employs a team of 400 and represents a £200m expansion.

The Campus at Hullavington is located close to Dyson’s Malmesbury campus where Dyson employs over 4,000 Dyson people, including the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology. Through The Dyson Institute, Dyson is making a £31m investment into higher education to help overcome the shortage of engineers in the UK. The four year degree programme, free of tuition fees, covers the fundamentals of engineering in years one and two. It delivers electronics and mechanical engineering content in years three and four – all alongside a paid job as part of Dyson’s research and development team, working on real products, with leading engineers and scientists

Dyson in Singapore

Dyson currently employs 1,100 people in Singapore across its new Singapore Technology Centre at Science Park One and its Advanced Manufacturing Centre at West Park where it manufactures 21m motors a year on autonomous production lines. Dyson draws on Singapore’s pool of highly skilled engineers and scientists, developing Dyson’s latest technologies as well as core robotic and software expertise.

The production manufacturing facility will build on Dyson’s existing advanced motor and battery expertise in Singapore and draw on the nation’s expertise in Research & Development, advanced manufacturing, automation and access to supply chains. The location was chosen due to:

Proximity and access to high-growth markets.

Ready access to a supply chain of advanced materials and components.

Availability of highly-skilled engineers and scientists

Advanced manufacturing capability.
